7/4/2023 0 Comments Full dark no stars 1922![]() ![]() It’s a horrifying discovery, rendered with bristling intensity, and it definitively ends a good marriage. Her toe knocks up against a box under a worktable and she discovers the stranger inside her husband. When her husband of more than twenty years is away on one of his business trips, Darcy Anderson looks for batteries in the garage. Making a deal with the devil not only saves Dave Streeter from a fatal cancer but provides rich recompense for a lifetime of resentment. "Fair Extension," the shortest of these tales, is perhaps the nastiest and certainly the funniest. Violated and left for dead, Tess plots a revenge that will bring her face-to-face with another stranger: the one inside herself. In "Big Driver," a cozy-mystery writer named Tess encounters the stranger along a back road in Massachusetts when she takes a shortcut home after a book-club engagement. For James, that stranger is awakened when his wife, Arlette, proposes selling off the family homestead and moving to Omaha, setting in motion a gruesome train of murder and madness. " writes Wilfred Leland James in the early pages of the riveting confession that makes up "1922," the first in this pitch-black quartet of mesmerizing tales from Stephen King. "I believe there is another man inside every man, a stranger. ![]() ![]() ![]() Is she dancing ever closer to the edge of her own disastrous end? High prince Roelstra, the main bad guy for this tale is a good opponent, pitting everyone against each other to get what he wants. ![]() ![]() The book continues on showing the struggles and triumphs of a prince who wishes to change the world with honor and laws instead of squabbling and war tearing through the land. His Fire-bound love for Sioned is tested during this first part of the book as well because they barely acknowledge each other as per their agreement, although it is hard they manage to pull through with the desired out-come through trials that I'm not sure I would have made it through. Those ideals carried on through the book, showing how he could play the dim-witted prince in the beginning of the book. Growing up in the shadow of a warrior prince, Rohan was scholarly and filled with ideals. It was filled with honor and treachery, light and shadow magic. ![]() 7/4/2023 0 Comments The great meaulnes![]() ![]() Frankly I think titles like those are just dumb, because they’re not translations at all. ![]() ![]() Gopnik comments in his Introduction that “In fact its title is exactly equivalent, in its combination of sardonic irony and appreciative applause, to that of Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby.”)īut almost every edition of this book in English has offered a different title, or combination of title and subtitle, including The Lost Estate, The Lost Domain, The Wanderer, and many more. OK, so “great” doesn’t convey everything the author meant by the French “grand,” but surely it’s a broad enough word with enough different senses to include most of it. The tricky one is the “Grand.” It more or less means “great” or “grand,” but translators have hesitated to use either of these English words, because neither of those nor any other word or phrase fully captures the nuance of the French “grand” in this context.įor my money, The Great Meaulnes is a perfectly good translation of the title, or at least the best available. “Le” of course is “the.” “Meaulnes” is the main character’s name-Augustin Meaulnes. It’s a novel that doesn’t even have a title that people can agree on. Le Grand Meaulnes is a peculiar book in some ways, and one that it definitely helped me to read the Introduction (in the edition I happen to have) by Adam Gopnik, as well as a note from the translator. ![]() 7/4/2023 0 Comments Sophia christina amoruso![]() ![]() ![]() Using freshly minted powers, the UK watchdog earlier this month banned an advert for PeoplePerHour, an online platform that connects freelancers with businesses. At least, that’s what a recent ruling by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) suggests. Fast-forward a mere half dozen years and this particular formulation looks to have evolved into just another linguistic tool of oppression, doing the very opposite of what it was intended for: denigrating rather than celebrating, patronising rather than promoting. Still, language is nothing if not fluid, and neologisms like “girl boss” are no exception. As a rallying cry for a generation of young women who might not otherwise have thought to start their own businesses, #girlboss bore countless hopes, dreams and gleefully hard-nosed aspirations out into the ether. That name was borrowed from a 1975 Betty Davis album, but with “girl boss” she signalled a defiantly female rebellion against the likes of ’80s power dressing trends (what were shoulder pads if not an attempt to give a woman a more masculine silhouette?). Adding a hashtag prefix, she sent it rocketing into public consciousness as the title of her autobiography, a bestseller that later became a TV series, and that described her transformation of an eBay vintage store into the multi-million-dollar fashion brand that is Nasty Gal. Back in 2014, American entrepreneur Sophia Amoruso popularised the word “girl boss”. ![]() 7/4/2023 0 Comments Novel the moonstone![]() ![]() ![]() Dorothy L Sayers, a queen of crime in the 1930s and 40s, echoing Eliot, pronounced it "probably the finest detective story ever written".
